Amazon brings AI summaries and Active Canvas features to first-gen Kindle Scribe
Amazon's original Kindle Scribe is receiving a significant software update that brings it closer to feature parity with the 2024 model. The update introduces two major features that enhance the device's functionality for readers and note-takers.
Active Canvas is the first notable addition, enabling users to write notes directly on any part of a book page, similar to annotating a physical book. Notes appear in resizable boxes that remain anchored to specific text sections, even when adjusting font sizes. This improvement replaces the previous system where notes were confined to the top of the page. The feature also includes enhanced highlighting options with text-snapping underlines for cleaner annotations.
The second major enhancement is AI summarization, which works alongside the existing handwriting recognition capability. This feature transforms handwritten notes into more legible text while maintaining a handwritten appearance, and uses AI to organize and interpret your annotations more effectively.
Existing first-generation Kindle Scribe owners should receive an automatic update notification upon powering on their device. Users can also manually install the update through the device settings under "Update Your Kindle."
While the update brings most new features to the original model, one notable exception is the Extended Margins feature, which remains exclusive to the 2024 Kindle Scribe. This feature allows users to expand margins for longer notes.
For potential buyers, the updated first-generation Kindle Scribe now offers similar functionality to the newer model at a lower price point. The main difference lies in aesthetics, with the 2024 model featuring a new green color option and premium design elements.
