Chevy Chase Bluntly Tells Director He 'Should Be Embarrassed' About SNL Documentary
On viewing Jason Reitman's film "Saturday Night," which documents the final 90 minutes before Saturday Night Live's premiere episode, original cast member Chevy Chase delivered a characteristically sharp response. After watching the film with his wife Jayni, Chase approached Reitman and simply stated, "Well, you should be embarrassed."
Reitman, speaking on David Spade and Dana Carvey's Fly on the Wall podcast, reflected on the moment with mixed emotions. While recognizing it as a quintessential Chevy Chase interaction, he acknowledged the irony of receiving such feedback after spending two years meticulously recreating the show's early moments and Chase's character.
Both Spade and Carvey found humor in Chase's reaction, with Spade noting "You couldn't even write it better," and Carvey adding that Chase likely understood the comedic value of delivering "the roughest thing you could say to a director."
Chase, who was the first cast member to depart SNL, went on to build a successful film career. Though he later joined NBC's Community as a regular cast member, he isn't expected to participate in the upcoming movie adaptation. His recent work includes roles in Zombie Town, The Christmas Letter, and the animated feature Panda vs. Aliens.
