A bezel-less iPhone with OLED display faces significant delays due to technical challenges, according to recent reports from The Elec. While Samsung and LG are developing prototypes, mass production hasn't begun, pushing the timeline beyond 2025-2026.

The design would feature flat edges with gentle curves similar to the Apple Watch Series 10, avoiding the extreme curves seen in some Chinese smartphones. This approach aims to minimize optical distortion when viewing the display from angles.

Three major technical hurdles currently prevent implementation:

  1. Concealing the Face ID array and front camera under the display while maintaining photo quality
  2. Meeting Apple's strict requirements for thin film encapsulation (TPE) and optical clear adhesive (OCA) to ensure perfect color reproduction
  3. Addressing durability concerns with the new display technology

Samsung specifically struggles with "transmittance" - ensuring the under-display front camera can capture clear photos through the screen's pixels.

While the concept of a completely bezel-less iPhone has captivated designers for nearly a decade, Apple is taking a cautious approach. The company won't proceed until these technical challenges are resolved, prioritizing functionality and durability over aesthetic appeal.

Unlike Chinese manufacturers who focus on achieving dramatic screen-to-body ratios, Apple's implementation would emphasize practical usability while maintaining the company's quality standards.

The delay reflects Apple's commitment to perfecting the technology before bringing it to market, ensuring the final product meets both aesthetic and functional requirements.
