James Gunn Reveals Why The Batman Part II Needs Another Year of Development
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn revealed that The Batman Part II's delay from October 2026 to October 2027 is due to an unfinished script. Director Matt Reeves is focused on creating the highest quality film possible, with no set timeline for script completion.
The film's production timeline requires approximately two years for pre-production, shooting, and post-production after the script is finalized. Under Gunn's leadership, DC has implemented a policy of not beginning production without completed scripts.
This delay creates a five-year gap between The Batman (March 2022) and its sequel. Meanwhile, the franchise continues through HBO's The Penguin series, which launched in September to positive reviews. Colin Farrell's performance as Oswald Cobb sets up potential storylines for The Batman Part II.
Matt Reeves has confirmed discussions about a second season of The Penguin with showrunner Lauren LeFranc, stating, "We're talking to Lauren about doing another season. That was a special experience. These characters don't belong to me; they belong to the world. It comes down to whether you can approach them in a way that expresses something personal."
The Batman Part II is now scheduled for release on October 1, 2027.
