Space Balls' highly-anticipated sequel is currently in development, with Josh Gad leading the writing team alongside Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit. The project has received direct involvement from original creator Mel Brooks.

During an appearance on "Let's Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa," Gad shared a memorable experience pitching the sequel concept to the 98-year-old Brooks. The veteran comedian, unfamiliar with recent Star Wars films, requested a detailed explanation of the new material.

"I pitch for 40 minutes," Gad revealed, describing an intense presentation where he detailed every comedic element and Star Wars reference. "I'm sweating, I am getting into every line and every beat and every comedic set piece, every reveal."

Brooks's response was simple but meaningful: "Wow. Josh, it really sounds like you've got your finger on the pulse!" Though Brooks lacked context for the newer Star Wars material, he placed his trust in Gad's vision.

While specific plot details remain under wraps, the sequel may focus on parodying the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Gad expressed his enthusiasm about the project, stating that working alongside Mel Brooks has been "one of the highlights of my career."

The original Space Balls, released in 1987, became a cult classic for its satirical take on the original Star Wars trilogy. This new installment aims to continue that legacy while incorporating elements from the expanded Star Wars universe that has emerged in the decades since.
